Fighting in the open
When two moving groups collide between outposts, fire is SIMULTANEOUS: both fleets loose their volley every round, so a group destroyed this round still gets its shot away. Nobody has the initiative, which means an even clash annihilates both sides.
Attacking an outpost
A siege is different. The garrison has the initiative — it fires first, then the sides alternate — and a force defending its own outpost gets bonus weapon power. That is why taking a held position costs far more than holding one.
- Base weapon power
- 1
- Defender bonus
- +1
- Base reach
- 2.00 AU
- Operation slots
- 3–7
A shield is extra BODIES rather than damage reduction: shield points are spent before any garrison unit dies, so each one buys a whole round during which the garrison keeps firing at full strength.
What a defender holds is hidden from you. Their garrison may carry research you cannot see and their shield does not show at all, so every prediction against an enemy outpost is optimistic. Bring a margin.
